Music, Games and Gifts

Am just listening to Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End and I would like to announce that "Up is down" is one of the most epic, heroic pieces of music I've ever come across. I don't remember it sounding quite this heroic in the movie (I think the scene that was attached to it was more of a comedy scene than anything!)

But yes. Music joy. Have the new Ooberman album (since it was unlikely anyone would even spot how to get hold of it let alone get it for me, I treated self along with two computer games that I knew I'd likewise never get otherwise: Hellgate and Crysis.)

Hellgate so far is looking rather shiny. A first/third person hack-and-slash RPG in the vein of diabolo disguised as a sci-fi shooter. It's a rare thing, this. Very multiplayer (as opposed to massively multiplayer -shudder-). Semi-random level generation. The premise: Basically, awesome. London (and the world) has been overrun by the forces of hell, and you play members of a rag-tag bunch of resistance fighters who are trying to fight back and stem the tide. There are three 'factions' if you like with their own visual and ability theme, and each faction has two classes within it.

The Templar faction may just be the coolest looking thing I've ever seen in a computer game. Turns out that the good old Poor Knights never really went away - they were just waiting for the right time. Stick a medieval knight in power armour (that looks SO GODDAMN SWEET) and give him a shiny sword o'doom, and you're there. These guys are the frontline fighters, with high defence tank flavour (Guardian) and hi offence dual-weapon-wielding flavour (Blademaster). Visually, these guys are so cool it hurts. Their shoulder pads are about three miles wide. And they wear cyber-plate mail. Wow.

The Cabalist faction is the obligatory mysterious eldritch mage style grouping. These guys are all about the magic, using the powers of hell against itself and even crossing the line into being a little bit naughty themselves. They look like they stepped straight from *insert fantasy RPG here*. The two flavours here are the Summoner and the Evoker. The summoner does what it says on the tin - he summons demons and elementals to fight on his side while he gets stuck in from the edges of battle. This isn't to say he can't fight himself - but he hardly dishes out the damage that the others do. The Evoker is made entirely of RAW ARCANE POWAAAAR with all the blasty spells you'd ever want and some pretty damn sweet styling (look for the awesome spiky blindfold head armour - rockin'). Using weird sci-fi glowy power focus gauntlet thingies, they send bolts of energy at the enemy and look pretty sweet while doing it. Also the evoker in the intro movie (which is available to watch in significantly reduced magnificence on YouTube, but still awesome) totally kicks ass.

The Hunter faction is the sci-fi military themed group. They're all about the gadgets and the guns, and look like they stepped straight from *insert military sci-fi FPS of your choice here*. The Marksman class is your standard run-and-gun dude (a bit like the marine in System Shock) with some sweet super-blasty powers that mean he can deal out the damage in ridiculous amounts. The Engineer class is rather shiny - he builds pretty glowy drone things that fly around him and zap/paralyse enemies, and is all about the equipment. He also starts off with boltguns. Hell. Yeah...

Sooo, I'm torn between Evoker, Guardian and Engineer. Gonna give it a short go with each, starting with Evoker, and see how things go. I can see Engineer being a slightly less popular choice online, so I might save it for then and fill in the gaps.

Go and watch the intro movie right now. Seriously. I almost wet myself. It's that good. For the Living! We March!

Merry Christmas, all.

I recall it did look awesome, not a huge fan of diabloesc games myself.

However.
Templars in Power armour. (Now if only I could mod it so they have black chalice symbols... ;))
And Cabalism. I'm yet to decide if there exists a cooler word in existance.

When I get my new laptop, with more than a 8mb graphics card, I may be forced to join you.

Yay Christmas!
You're right, Up Is Down is one of the most awesome things in the whole world ever. I need that soundtrack.
Have a great Christmas, and I hope we actually see you in the new year.

Saw a review on the Escapist for it a while back:

It looks quite cool. I like the 'free online' aspect. May need to research on whether my computer can play it, and if it's any good.

Although I'm once again reminded of how little time I have. Lame.

Finished Planescape: Torment at 3 this morning, though. Made it through the whole game as a 'lawful' 'good' mage.

Mages suck.

That's really creepy. I'm also playing through Planescape: Torment.

Maybe it's the season for it?

Yes I origonally started playing through as a fighter, then multiclassed into mage (yay! Minmaxing ftw)
Ultimately however having to rest all the time is irritating, and as cool as the spell effects look, smacking someone with str 25 and a big hammer is more effective.

Str, Con and Wis for the win.

Oddly I find being evil often the harder route in crpg, since so often the bennies for being nice (xp and stuff, as well as not having respawning gaurds) makes virtue the min-maxing option.

Just to hijack - did you receive the texts/voicemail I left on your phone about money and house account? If not please to put money in asap, as I can't pay the council tax until people do so!

Listen not to Katherine, think of the soundtrack, the soundtrack!

Money should be in the account - put it in a few days ago. Let me know if there are any problems.
