2. The name came from wanting to make a horribly broken person who, like most of my characters, has been on a journey. However, unlike most of them, this person's journey had already begun, and was already nearing its finale. I wanted a sweet, friendly and innocent sounding name to contrast the little girl she had once been with the horribly broken woman she was when she turned up in the dag.
3.a. I came up with the character during that weird period of time between about 10pm and 4am when even though you're slightly tired and out of it, a muse is buzzing in your head and you just want to write write write until you're done.
3.b. The original intent for the character was for her to be an 'assassin' archetype - cold and calculating and utterly devoid of remorse. She ended up more as a swashbuckler mixed with physician/'psychonaut', obsessed with watching things fall apart - including herself.
3.c. I listened to the kill-bill soundtrack five times through while coming up with ideas and fleshing out her background. I also listened to 'Clint Eastwood' by Gorrilaz at least twelve times. It, like most of my character backgrounds, rapidly turned into a full-blown short story, and was filled with so very much angst.
4. Her parents were killed by Ilyadena army soldiers high on the Shadovald world equivalent of 'shoot pills' - probably red - while raiding a field hospital. Following this, and with no-where to go, she found herself serving as an orderly and later, a nurse, in the now appropriated Ilyadena military hospital.
5. She may or may not have been based ever so slightly on a cross between herbert west and o-ren ishi.
6.a. I intentionally never really considered whether Grace was her actual full name or not. I guess her parents would have called her Gracie.
6.b. Her ultimate quest, which she believed she had already completed, was the eradication of the entire family tree of the Ilyadena general who had authorised the attack on the hospital where her parents were located.
